Acoustic propagation in fluids: an unexpected example of Lorentzian geometry

چکیده

It is a deceptively simple question to ask how acoustic disturbances propagate in a non–homogeneous flowing fluid. If the fluid is barotropic and inviscid, and the flow is irrotational (though it may have an arbitrary time dependence), then the equation of motion for the velocity potential describing a sound wave can be put in the (3+ 1)–dimensional form ∆ψ ≡ ∂μ ( √−g g ∂νψ) / √−g = 0. The acoustic metric gμν(t, ~x) governing the propagation of sound depends on the density, flow velocity, and local speed of sound. Even though the underlying fluid dynamics is Newtonian, non–relativistic, and takes place in flat space + time, the fluctuations (sound waves) are governed by a Lorentzian spacetime geometry. 43.20.+g, 02.40.-k, 03.40.-t, 47.10.+g Typeset using REVTEX 1

Acoustic black holes: horizons, ergospheres and Hawking radiation

It is a deceptively simple question to ask how acoustic disturbances propagate in a non-homogeneous flowing fluid. Subject to suitable restrictions, this question can be answered by invoking the language of Lorentzian differential geometry. This paper begins with a pedagogical derivation of the following result: if the fluid is barotropic and inviscid, and the flow is irrotational (though possi...

Causal structure of acoustic spacetimes

The so-called “analogue models of general relativity” provide a number of specific physical systems, well outside the traditional realm of general relativity, that nevertheless are well-described by the differential geometry of curved spacetime. Specifically, the propagation of acoustic disturbances in moving fluids are described by “effective metrics” that carry with them notions of “causal st...

Effect of Thermocline Formation on Underwater Acoustic Waves Propagation in Persian Gulf

Thermocline layer have remarkable effects on acoustic propagation in Persian Gulf environment. So far, no comprehensive research has been conducted to explore thermocline layer, especially its characteristics including top, thickness, and thermal gradient of thermocline in Persian Gulf. Besides, effects of thermocline on underwater acoustic propagation including transmission loss and sound chan...

Solution of propagation of acoustic-gravity waves in the atmosphere using finite difference method of order two

Investigating waves propagation’s equation in the atmosphere is one of the important and widely used issues in various sciences, which has attracted many researchers. A type of propagating waves is an acoustic-gravity wave. These type of waves have a lot of stationarity properties and can be propagate to a high altitude in the atmosphere. The equation of acoustic-gravity wave propagation is a h...
